Classic Game I've Always Loved, But this New Version is Cheap and Poorly Manufactured
I've loved this game for decades and fondly remember playing Upwords with my grandmother on a weekly basis while watching The Price is Right as a young child. Unsurprisingly, the gameplay is just as I remember. I see it as a faster and simpler version of Scrabble. I find the games much quicker since you can drop just a tile or two on the board during a turn and still score plenty of points. I remember the older version I played was HEAVY ON THE BROWN. The board, the box, the tile holders--all brown. While it wasn't the prettiest game, especially by modern standards, it's stamped in my mind. My girlfriend and I have been on a board game kick during this pandemic, and I mentioned Upwords to her, and to my surprise, she never heard of it. I frequently saw vintage versions at thrift stores which I was tempted to get. but I was always concerned about missing pieces. So screw the flowers and chocolate, I got her this for Valentine's Day. The box certainly has changed its look, but I kinda liked it. If you never heard of it, the overall redesign makes it look like a fresh, modern game that was released in the past few years. But once I opened the box, I was immediately a bit disappointed by the fit and finish of everything. Instead of a full framed border on the tiles that would make them stack neatly and securely on top of one another--as the older version had--these new tiles have a little dot/pip on each corner with small indentations on the underside of each tile for them to sit in. Be prepared to spend some time trying to get these to sit flush and time restacking them after knocking them over to see what letters were played underneath a stack. It is a poor, cheap tile stacking solution. The face of the tiles are poorly stamped, with each letter having awful wavy lines and curves--plus the letters themselves have poor centering tolerances, making them looking terribly misaligned when on your tile holder. And what's up with this cheap aqua bag to hold/store your tiles? I believe they want to you spread the tiles out face-down when playing, but I've always drawn them straight from the bag while replacing letters during play. I can't see this bag lasting more than a few games as it reminds me of the pouches used for Uncle Ben's microwavable rice. Couldn't we get something made of inexpensive fabric, felt, or burlap with a drawstring? The rotating board is a nice touch as I believe my old Upwords never featured that. Like everything else, it's not smooth and feels cheap, but it works and gets the job done. Overall I still love the game, but this edition feels like corners were cut during every part of manufacturing. If you're interested, I would honestly look for an older version on sale with a more sturdy design--as I mentioned, they're always available at my local second-hand stores. And if you find that it's missing tiles, a quick search yielded me dozens of results for replacements--and it would still be much cheaper than getting this new version.

GREAT family fun
In this time of technology it is fun to step away and play an old-fashioned game. It's kind of like scrabble except you can stack letters up to 5 high, changing the words. It's a great game for all ages. Be careful - it can be addictive! I gave this as gifts to my team at work. Good price for lots of fun.

Not as sturdy as the original game/pieces.
Not as sturdy as original game. The pieces feel cheap.

Great Game
Lots of fun.

Very different tiles and board from previous model.
We do not like the new design. Tiles are difficult to get on board, hard to see how many are stacked. Tray sits on a round stand so board can turn. Cheaply made. Previous board was a stery plastic.

Boring
My family LOVES board games. I bought Upwords because I thought it would be fun for the adults and older kids alike. I was sorely disappointed. I played it twice with a different group of adults each time, and all of the adults who played with me are smart and educated... and despite my insistence, they wouldn't play past 20 minutes- the game just didn't work. I am sorry because I am always looking for games that will span the generations- and it didn't even work for one.

Awesome game
Like the swivel. No weird cardboard smell. Excellent quality, as expected

It's easy to play, and a fun change of pace from S------e.
Unlike Scrabble, this game lets you change a word (or words) that are already on the board by 'stacking' letters from your rack onto letters that have been played. Scoring is way different too. Letters in a word without other stacked letters are worth 2 pts each. If there are stacked letters in the word they're worth 1 pt each.....but you get to count all the previously stacked letters in the word also. (I hope I'm describing this correctly.) There are no blanks. There is a 'Qu' tile, not Q by itself as in Scrabble. Leftover tiles at the end of the game.....5 pnt penalty per letter. The pieces themselves are interlocking to the board and to each other to keep them in place, and the board is on a 'lazy susan' type of rotating frame. Try it. You'll like it!

Creative twist to scrabble
On our first crack at this game, we thought we could stack letters to create new words even if the adjacent/connecting words are affected. But we realized that we can only stack letters to create new, valid words and that the stacked letter does not change or create a weird adjacent or connecting word. Scoring is simple. You get 2 points for each tile in a word you create, 1 point on stacked letters (1 point for 1 stacked letter, 2 points for 2 stacked letters, 3 for 3 stacked tiles, etc) The components are sturdy and the stacked tiles don't fall off. In fact before buying this game I was afraid that the stacked tiles would fall off and lead to awkward handling, so I posted my question on Amazon. Out of the 7 who answered, 6 said the tiles don't fall off because they have tiny pegs that clasp to the tile. I don't know why 1 person answered "yes, they fall". But rest assured they don't. We've played it 3 times already and we're very happy with this purchase. Strong buy (if you like word games).

14 alphabets from M-Z were missing
We were too excited to play, but that's when we found that, there were alphabets from A-L only. Other alphabets were missing from the box. Product returned.

Fun, ready to play!
This is our second copy of this game - this edition has more letters and slightly larger board, so this makes it better for groups to play. Rotating board makes it easy to read from all positions. More fun than Scrabble, challenging for all ages!

Great game for all the family
This is much more fun than scrabble and easier to play for all the family. It is much more compact than the original upwords game so much easier to store and take with you.
