Good job = but requires 3M = quick change adapter
This coarse, heavy duty disc does a good job of final cleaning / preparing for painting after removal of a weld. It's perfect for various light grinding / deburring / finishing. Works well on aluminum. This won't work with Bosch or Dewalt 4 1/2" cordless grinders without 3M's TN quick change adapter, which can be purchased in less quantity at various industrial supply stores (brick & mortar) (Industrial, not home construction, such as Lowe's etc) > 3M automotive customer service suggested Grainger industrial distributor, or even some larger NAPA automotive stores. Internet sites & 3M sell by the case. The back side of the disc isn't smooth = so it sits cockeyed and is not usable without the 3M adapter.

Works great for knocking down rust, loose paint. Good for bodywork.
I got this for my husband to try out, he's always got something going (renovating houses, old trucks and equipment etc.) I asked him if he had any use for a Scotch-Brite grinding pad and he volunteered to evaluate it. He says it's about midway between a 36-grit and an 80-grit fiber grinding disc in aggressiveness. Note: He already has the required back-up pad kit: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Change-Backup-02140-Diameter/dp/B0012LJTXK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_328_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41ukCreIrVL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=XKEYXG0EE20HYYTXCAVZ for the 3M 4 & 1/2" back-up system. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST when using this pad. It's clearly spelled out in the product insert, complete the 3M part number, contrary to what some other reviewers say. When you buy the backup pad system, you have to declare that you are a professional/consumer user. You don't just screw this onto your grinder that turns 13000 RPMS and start grinding; the built-in retaining "nut" is very thin metal and convex; it's designed to hold the abrasive disc to the pad holder ONLY. Durability is good depending on what you are doing with it. It's a consumable working in a harsh environment; if you blow through one in a few minutes you probably need to re-assess what you are expecting of it. These work great for removing layers of paint in preparation for bodywork. They will leave scratches that will need to be filled. Again, about what you'd get from a fiber disc. A high RPM tool can be very unforgiving if you don't have your technique down; they have 2 speeds, "off" and "wide open". I'd suggest a novice try a variable-speed tool first. These are especially good for cleaning up welds, a light touch won't remove too much material; they are great for pre-weld paint and rust removal. The usual common-sense safety precautions apply (safety glasses, breathing protection, don't grind lead paint) as well as don't get in tight spaces where it can bind; start the tool off the work, moving from the center of the work to run off the edge not into it; use a low angle so you don't get gouges and prematurely wear the edge of the pad. Stuff you should already know. These are great at what they are intended for, good old USA-made 3M quality. They are way more expensive than fiber discs in a comparable size (street price is about $5 each in a case of 10; the local auto paint store has unbranded fibers for a buck apiece) but for certain applications do their job very well and are worth the price.

Works With the Intended System
I got this for my husband without realizing that the quick change system is a system by 3M which requires the use of an additional purchase of the 3M TN Quick Change Fibre Disc Backup Pad so I purchased that for him so he could use the 3M pads. The TN platform quickly allows you to change 3M products as needed without using any tools and retainer nuts. The TN Quick Change Back-up Pad3M TN Quick Change Fibre Disc Backup Pad 02140, 4-1/2" Diameter, 5/8"-11 INT Hole, Black (Pack of 1) must be used with all 4 ½ “ attachments. Works great with the intended system. This is considered to be industrial/commercial use product.

Part of my daily grind
Before 3M was 3M it was the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company and, as such, it has a lengthy history of working with and building grinding and cutting products. This is a first rate grinding and blending disc - that also comes at a premium price. To use it properly you also need a TN Quick-Change Backup Pad. I managed without buying the backup pad as I am a master improviser but I am not going to tell you how I did it as you may not be as lucky as me. (To illustrate the risks I take, I once use as a handheld circular saw to cut off a fence post - and I was cutting below ground level in all the dirt and stones. Amazingly I still have all my fingers and toes!) If you can afford these excellent discs, you can also afford the backup pad.

Excellent Durabilty Albeit At A High Price
The first thing to keep in mind when you buy this is that you will need the 3M quick change backup pad at an additional cost of $10 for this to work correctly. Once installed this works very well for its intended purpose of blending and light grinding of metal. I used this on a steel door that had some sharp overhangs and this worked very well to reduce them. The pad itself held up well and there was little heat. The metal did have some coarse scratch marks so this is not for fine jobs but as long as you know what its uses and limitation are it will work very well and hold up for some time. The one downside is that similar quality grinding discs typically cost much less than this 3M disc. If the price was just slightly higher it would still be a 5 star product but at current prices it is hard to justify.

Useless without the special backing pad
Be forewarned that these discs require a special backing pad, so this "trial" version isn't complete without the backing pad. Since I was offered a free sample to evaluate for the purposes of reviewing it, but wasn't offered the required backing pad, I haven't been able to properly put this item to the test.
