Puts out a fair bit of steam!
When I received this steam generator, I was surprised how small it was; I had an image in my mind of it being bigger. None the less, I decided to give it a try. I've been pretty pleased with it. It claims it holds enough water for 2 hours' steaming, but if you fill it with cold water you end up getting just over an hour's worth of steaming before the low water shutoff is activated. But when I want more than an hour of steaming, I just put a pot of water on the kitchen stove, and when this steamer looks like it's getting low, I refill it with already boiling-hot water and can carry on steaming seamlessly. I've had good luck steam bending the inner gunwales for a 95-year-old wood-canvas canoe from Old Town.

First Attempt - Success!
I bought this steam generator 2 years ago. It was "on sale" so I thought, "why not, I will eventually give it a try." Two weeks ago, I was inspired to build a trout landing net which required steam bending thin (1/8th inch) strips of walnut, birch, and yew wood. Out of the box and ready to go, I only needed to study the manual that came with the steam generator then construct a steam chamber. I was off and running! There was nothing difficult about this process. Other than being extra cautious (it never hurts to be careful) about potential over pressurization, I simply plugged in the steam generator, checked my timing parameters, then proceeded to work on another craft project while I waited for the steam process to take place. Fifteen minutes later, my first strips were ready to clamp to the jig. The wood was like butter and molded easily around the template. I left the steamed wood clamped to the jig for 24 hours (although I recently learned that it's not necessary to wait that long), then completed the gluing up process (messy, but the excess glue sands off easily). The result is the attached picture. I can only say good things about this steamer. This was my very first attempt at steam bending; and it worked! The kit includes everything you need to set up your system. The only thing you need to do, besides building your steam box is drill a hole for the fitting that connects the steam hose to the box. The manual includes a very nice set of instructions for building your own steam box out of plywood. I made mine out of PVC, and while the PVC warped a bit from the intense heat, it was still satisfactory. I plan to build a similar box out of 3/4" marine plywood; other people use galvanized stove pipe and even stainless steel if you want to get fancy. As true for any project using steam and tools, be sure to study the warnings and precautions described in the manual. You will be dealing with 212 degree steam so wear gloves when you are removing your steamed wood or are in contact with the system while it is in operation. The Earlex Steam Generator has opened up a whole new world of wood crafting for me, and I thank them sincerely for a product that has allowed me to get started with a very effective unit at a very reasonable price.

Early review. Really early
Rather cheap feeling but time will tell. It does, sort of, come with instructions, but so general as to be fairly worthless - instead, stating there are many websites to look at. Duh! Will return with update.

Replaced Portable Sauna Steamer
Excellent product to replace the portable sauna steamers that tend to fail after repeated use. There is no on or off switch, it turns on when plugged into a power source, there is also no timer when in use. I splurged and purchased a wifi outlet that has remote control function along with a physical on and off switch. I am hoping I will not need to replace this after 6 months of daily use.

Does its job
This unit does its job. It performs well. Two minor criticisms: i wish the unit produced hotter steam, and I wish the water reservoir was had greater capacity. Sometimes the water is used up, forcing the unit to shut down, before the steaming project is completed.

Just go to Home Depot or Lowes
So, I use these things to steam horse hay and they work great. They are not durable for my twice daily, 7 days/week, 365 days a year needs. To be fair, they're not made for that kind of use and I expect to burn through one (literally) about every 6 months. I am on my 4th unit like this. You must keep up with the descaling and there is no auto shut-off--so you leave it on, the water runs out, the units burns out. This exact unit is the same as the Wagner 725 and are readily available at HD or Lowes for about $10 bucks cheaper, the convenience of return if necessary and a Wagner 800 support #. They are identical with different stickers on the outside and (i believe) Earlex makes these for Wagner.

Using for wood bending, works fine so far.
Have get gotten it and used it two steam some slats 1/16" thick cherry. 30 minutes of steaming and they bent easily. Only negative I have found is the ability to see the water level through the side of the container. The fill line is on a thicker area and the water behind it is hard to see. Instructions say 4 liters of water, Converts to 8 1/2 pints Will use that to fill it rather than try to see through the container and see the water level. Takes 15min. and is steaming very well.

Worked great.
Unit works perfectly. I used it to remove thick ice from the edge of my roof. I added a 6" pipe nipple onto the provided brass fitting and was able to melt through the ice easily. Also used it to defrost my chest freezer. Once heated up, it produces steam for about 2 hours. No power switch, just plug in and wait about 20 minutes for it to start producing steam. Nice to have 12' hose to give lots of reach.

Well worth the money!
This unit is worth its weight in gold! I am just about finished building a small rowboat and I used the steamer to bend two chine logs and four sheers … two inner and two outer. All oak. Made plastic bags out of 6 mil plastic, attached the steamer hose, and bent them in place. This little unit worked like a champ! Worth every penny.

Works as 'sposed to, but slow.
Since this is my first attempt at steam bending, I was going by the "one hour per inch, 30 min per half inch" recommendation. To bend my 1/4" cedar strips actually takes 3 fills of the tank to get them pliable. It's a good thing I'm not in a hurry. October Edit: After spending a lot of the summer working with this, I'm updating. Making steam 10 hrs./day for months on end, I was afraid to see my electric bill, but, to my relief, it was not excessive at all. Now that I'm done steam bending, I have no idea what else to do with it.
