Works, but needs work
The media could not be loaded. So I had read all the other reviews, or at least those where they talk about the problems and how to fix them, and decided to take a chance on this set. I get it to function, but it took some time and effort. The other reviews/solutions were very helpful, but none of them fully solved my problem, so I figured I'd write down what I did. 1) Be careful when assembling the tracks. It's called E-Z, but it really should be E-Zier but not foolproof. When the rails connect, they have small metal fittings for the bottom of the metal rails. Make sure these slide in. A number of mine were bent slightly, so I used some needle nose pliers to bend them back. To be fair to Bachman, these issues are covered in the guide to E-Z Track assembly. I'm not big on reading manuals (especially those called E-Z), but I'd definitely suggest glancing at this one. 2) Some reviews talked about loosening the internal screws, and another mentioned loosening the top screw that holds on the cover. I had to fully remove all these screws before the engine would run. Even the one on the top cover, if it was screwed in at all, even lightly, the engine wouldn't move. To reiterate what others have said, remove the top screw and cover, and then you'll see two screws on the side of the engine block. I would try loosening them first as others have said, but if that doesn't work, then I would just remove them altogether. My locomotive seems to run fine without them. 3) Even after this, the train still wouldn’t run reliably. It would just stop frequently. I could get it to run again by pressing down lightly on the engine, so I ended up taping 3 quarters on top (see video). After running the engine around the loop a few times, I could take the quarters off and it would still run reliably. 4) Finally, connecting the cars was a bit of a pain, but it was easy once I figured out to lower them in, then put the car on the track, instead of the more intuitive method of putting the car on the track and then rolling it to connect the couplers. Once I did all that, the train seemed to run fine. I can run it at any speed, even all the way up, without derailment or problem.

Wrong locomotive - should be a 2-8-2 - not a 0-6-0
All the Durango Silverton trains (K-28’s & K-36’s) are 2-8-2 locomotives, not the 0-6-0 as shipped in the train set. Comparatively, the 0-6-0 engines are diminutive in size compared to the 2-8-2 locomotives. Having ridden the Durango-Silverton NGRR numerous times, I was very disappointed in the differences. I also wish there were light and smoke capabilities on the N-scale, but understand the limits of such a small scale. Additionally, the DS engines have their headlight mounted at the very top at the front of trains with engine number plates to either side of the light. Another engine number plate is prominently mounted in the center of the circle at the front of the engine (see attached photo). Bachmann no longer makes a 2-8-2 locomotive that I could find, but they do still make a 2-6-2 which would have more closely depicted the actual locomotives used by the Durango-Silverton train. In my humble opinion it would have been a more suitable locomotive to represent the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. I received the train and I am pleased with it other than it isn’t the correct locomotive that the DSNGRR actually uses. I also had problems getting the train to run, but after loosening the two internal screws and retightening the screws holding the two blocks together, I was able to get the locomotive to run. The shinny shafts hooked to the large drive wheels came loose from one of the rear drive wheels. Both problems were fixable - but petty difficult - especially getting the small pin holding the shiny shafts through the two holes in two of the shafts and reinserted into the hole on the side of the left rear drive wheel on the locomotive. Some of these complaints may seem petty, but if you are going to market a train set after such a famous and well known railroad, I feel that Bachmann has a responsibility to accurately depict the train. I own other Bachmann train sets, and none have had the quality problems that I found and that others have also identified.

Issues but fixable
** Important cute little set, engine would not run called Bachmann no help, put a meter on the track make sure its getting power.track has power the issue is with engine. Amazon reshipped a replacement. Same issue!!! OK this is the fix!! On the top of the engine a small black screw, (don't loose the screw) lift off the engine cover. you will see 2 screws, i just loosed them a touch. Then placed the engine back on the powered track!!! Success. I think the screws were too tight not allowing the motor gear to turn. Replace the engine cover, and enjoy the set. N-scale set are very tricky but for 100 buck well worth it. I plan on telling Bachmann as the quality control is poor, Thanks for reading

Engine doesn't run? Read ski2312's review and loosen tiny screw on the top of the engine.
Nice detail, but a bit temperamental. When I received my set, there was a yellow post-it on the engine that said, "locomotive defective." Evidently, someone had already sent this set back. I checked the engine, and it didn't budge, and I sent it back. I was then running another Bachmann engine probably of identical design. It was working fine then stopped dead. That's when I remembered ski2312's review on January 13, 2017. If you have this problem, read his review, but basically loosening the tiny screw on the top of the engine allowed it to run again. I removed the engine housing and it ran fine. I put the housing back on, but didn't over tightened the tiny screw and it continued to run fine. It seems that if the housing is too tight, it shorts out the engine. I wish I had tried this before I sent my set back. You are unlikely to damage the engine using this trick. If it still doesn't work, then send it back.

Good quality but....
Good quality but very VERY finicky to run smoothly; I definitely should have looked at the scale as it is very small and even for an adult it takes a good amount of patience to get to run properly

Nice purchase
Beautiful looking set. My only issue was getting the tracks to align so that the cars can move smoothly forwards and backwards.I purchased this in late 2016 for my Christmas village so this year I'll have more time to set it up properly.
