Watersports!
I just bought my third Timex Expedition digital. They last around 7 to 10 years on my wrist before they look so thrashed that I just replace the whole watch before the battery gives out. After years of satisfied use, here are my recommendations: Casio G-Shocks (and similar Casio types) are great, but a Timex Expedition/Ironman has a MUCH easier to read display and is MUCH easier to setup/program and use the features. Maybe others will disagree but Timex's setup/ programming/use just makes a lot more intuitive sense to me. The (somewhat) easy to follow instruction are linked from the Amazon page. If you're into any kind of water sports, and particularly surfing or snorkeling (ie sandy surf activities), get a model with a Velcro band. Nothing is as comfortable, versatile and works as well in the water as Velcro! The Timex Indiglo backlight feature is simply awesome. It's just way better than Casio's backlights. I prefer the Timex Expedition, rather than the Ironman because I like the big center button to be the Indiglo light rather than the Start/Split button that I rarely use.

Watch good, instructions missing.
Watch is easy to read and has lots of settings available. Initial date time setting is complicated. Could not get original date time setting instructions from the Timex web site. Instructions did not come with the watch, only a web site. But since I had done it with a similar watch, after some fumbling I got it done. The tab on the end of the cloth band is too thick to easily be pulled through the loop on the other end of the band. Since this would be a daily annoyance I ground the tab down. Now it is easier to put the watch on or take it off.

Excellent daily beater of a watch
I've been wearing one of these since high-school so over 18 years of using this exact make and model. This is the 4th or 5th one I have purchased. I replace the batteries when they need it and run them til they need replaced. I do not baby these things, I am a bit clumsy and often run them into walls and stuff I am walking by. I've been free diving in pools 10-15ft deep with them no problem. If you need an every day beater of a watch that keeps good time and does many of the other things this watch will do give these a try. Also the day and date functions on this watch work extremely well so if you have a hard time keeping track of the days/months like I do these are great. I'm gonna run this one till it won't run anymore and when it does give up the ghost I'll probably buy another one. Hopefully Timex keeps making these gems because I know I would have a hard time finding something else to fill the same role this does for me as well as these do.

Nice watch at a good price.
I've had watches similar to this and so I was looking for this type of watch. It is an excellent, inexpensive watch that I'm happy to wear almost anywhere.

A Timely Discovery
After buying a very disappointing Casio el cheapo, first bad one I've ever had but it was royally bad, tended to reset itself if you placed it face down on the counter for example.... I ended up with this watch as a replacement. Wish I had seen this one first. The face is large and friendly. The display is both high contrast and suitably large print. I am getting older and it's nice not to have to squint. Even the secondary data like day and month are larger than many digital watches' main display yet the overall size is not humunguous. I like a large watch as I have large wrists and hands and this does not overwhelm. It's a bit thick and a little plasticky but it's not a Cartier or even a Seiko and I didn't buy it for elegance. The backlighting takes a bit of getting used to as it shows the dial in reverse, like a photo negative for those of you who actually remember photo negatives. :) But a couple of days on and I'm fine with it, The normal watch face is of such a contrast that I only need to use the backlight in real darkness and once you get used to the different look, it's not a problem to read at all. It's alleged to be waterproof to 100 meters but you must take that with a major grain of salt with anything but a genuine diving watch. If it survives an occasional dunk in the sink or a swim I will be happy. Watchband: The watchband is Velcro with a touch of something neoprene-like at the tip of the "belt" It's a bit awkward as the band doubles back through a "keeper" like the strap on a backpack and the whole thing is a bit thick and not easy to do one-handed. My wrist is thick enough I can't just undo the Velcro part, I have to slip the entire band out of the "belt" to take it off. A nuisance but not a fatal one, if your wrists are smaller you won't even notice. if my wrist was any larger, the band would not fit as it is extended almost to the Neoprene tab at the end, Other reviews have commented on this as well. I haven't yet played with the various inevitable extra features: stop watch, alarm, microwave oven etc. I rarely use them so I can't comment but as a nice, basic watch for everyday knockabout use, I am well pleased and the price is quite reasonable. You can spend more and get worse. Casio used to be my cheap watch of choice but their quality seems to have diminished badly. I haven't had a Timex since I was a kid (and that was long enough ago that you wound the watch by hand) but perhaps I've been away too long, I like this watch, it's not fancy but it works. Update 8/2015: Since I bought this I have started doing volunteer work at a local aquarium. Once a week, this watch is regularly dipped (up to my elbow) in salt water for minutes at a time and it's holding up fine. The band is getting worn and some of the rubbery parts are turning white, probably from the salt so it's definitely not the watch for classy evening wear now. No question it is water-proof for this level of use (up to about three feet deep with lots of activity) and I like it even more now. Update - May 2016- Keeps on trucking. Weekly salt water dunks continue with no problem whatsoever. Plastic case is showing tiny nicks and dents from rough usage and banging on the rocks. Velcro bajnd still works fine but has turned a sort of weathered "salt and pepper color". Update - Almost November 2016 - Velcro on the watch band has almost given up the ghost. Barely sticks now. I take it off and put it on at least once a day so I guess the "hook and loop" material is just worn out. A replacement band will probably cost as much as the watch so it may be time (no pun intended) to replace this one. On the plus side, the same battery is still going strong. Can't beat this watch overall for value. Great value in a basic every day watch. No longer even vaguely suitable for wearing with a good suit to the Symphony but it's a primo work-a-day watch.

New watch different watch strap
Have stuck with Timex Ironman watches over recent years but have been repeatedly frustrated and disappointed by the short life of the resin straps .Although you can get a replacement strap it can be very tricky to fit. I tried this and although the strap I received did match the watch product number,I found it impossible to fit it. This particular model was a US import and has a leather and fibre strap which I hope will be easier to replace when the time comes and thus prolong the life of the watch. This strap does appear quite flimsy though so will have to see how it wears. I am happy with the format of the watch and the indiglo light feature which I find particularly useful.

Good but disappointing strap.
I quite like this watch. Numbers are a good size and its to read. Battery lasts well. The raised surround protects the glass well. The functions are easy to navigate and operate nearly as you'd expect. The big disappointment as is so often the case with a lot of watches these days is the rubbish strap. Sure looks fine as new but the different materials stretch at different rates so you get stress at the joins. ... and then it falls apart, after a year and a half. Quite tedious having to get new strap. I had a freebie watch from Runners World before this which got very harsh treatment (it was free after all) and the strap was still going strong after nearly a decade. Why can't Timex manage to do the same on a 20 - 30 pound watch?

Good while it lasted
I bought this watch on a great time-limited offer in the Amazon sale period last November 2014. The big attraction for me was an everyday watch that lights up and tells me the time when I wake up in the middle of the night. Yes, the Indiglo thing. Marvellous. Unfortunately, little people like pressing the button and, after 8 months of use, the Indiglo flashed and shorted out, never to work again. I've had the battery changed, just in case, but to no avail. All I know now is that, when I wake up in the middle of the night, it's still dark! Amazon site tells me that return is no longer possible, the last chance being 31 Jan 2015. Ah, well.

so it's easy to change mode/make the back light go on just ...
I'd have given this 3 stars had it worked for more than 5 days, however the back light failed within the week. Check other reviews before considering. It's a shame the quality can't be assured otherwise this would be a decent every day watch. The only other niggle is that the buttons are very sensitive, so it's easy to change mode/make the back light go on just by touching a surface with it. Compass is a bit of a gimmick, but I actually found it quite useful.

Brilliant little bit of kit
Brilliant tough little watch. Can't fault it for £10. I bought it for timing legs on my cross-country flying navigation legs. The big display digits, easy-to-activate night light (which stays on a few seconds so you can press the button then hold the watch up to your eyes in turbulence without taking your hands off the yoke) and the little compass - whilst not massively accurate unless you can stand stock-still for ten seconds - is a nice little gadget. Might buy a couple more to keep as spares!!
