What a disappointing kit
My 5 year old was so excited to make gems and geodes. I’m sorry but the science on this kit is really terrible. An Epsom salt slurry is not a gem. Plah doh is not a gem. Putting plastic gems in dirt is not an experiment. I had high hopes but really felt this was junk. I wish you could make real gems or crystals.

Not as expected
All of the ingredients are from home. Oil, flour, salt epsom salt etc. We followed the instructions step by step and the texture was watery. We doubled the dry ingredients and it didn’t help much. There was no way to press the gem shapes into the soupy mixture. The experiment failed.

Too many things for you to supply on your own.
Like any buyer, I expect to provide some of the basic things in any science kit. Water, for example. Containers. And I understand that some items like Epsom salts or food coloring may be difficult to provide and meet child product safety labeling requirements. But this kit probably shouldn’t have been brought to market. The manufacturer could not even include a piece of string. So frugal.

Meh
I give this a solid meh. It has a bunch of plastic gems and a booklet to help you "make gems" at home. It is actually just flour, Epson salt, and food coloring mixed with water. It doesn't have anything to make true crystals. There are better kits i think out there. But if you want a simple one this would work.

An Exercise in Patience
Like most science kits I've found recently, you need to supply most of the standard pantry staples needed to make these "gems" - I had all the materials in my home already, but I think epsom salts might be the one that most people may not keep stocked regularly. In any case, I had a similar kit growing up and remember the gems being rather unimpressive, but the process of watching them grow over the course of several days (and then crushing the soft mineral build up before they amounted to anything) was still satisfying, so I think I went into this with the right expectations. You're not going to make gems that you can make jewelry with, you're sort of just watching some food-coloring tinted mineral build up. This set has some cool tools that enhance the experience and an educational booklet, but if you hype your kid up about making their own sparkling diamond, you're setting up for a disappointment. This is a great supplement for homeschooling, learning about geology and minerals, and the quality of the included tools are very high end.

Didn’t work like we expected
I ordered this set for my 7 year old to use and we are very disappointed. My child loves gemstones and rocks so I thought this would be fun learning for him. The set is really just overpriced plastic pieces with 5 sets of instructions that require additional materials from your home. You need to have epsom salt, food coloring, water, flour, vegetable oil, regular salt, string, and soil to complete all the options. We have tried a couple of the labs and they have failed miserably. Followed the instructions exactly and it did not make crystals or gems. This has only made my son not want to do more science. I would not recommend this set.

Kids enjoyed this but could be improved !
My kids ages 3, 7 and 10 were all excited to open this set and get to the fun! Thankfully we had epsom salt and food coloring etc at home because that would of been disappointing to open and not get to create. It really should include the items needed in the kit! They really liked the fact that there was a gem for each of them to use. After a few days or so I let them use their “gem” in the tub like a bath bomb. Over all this was fun and nice that we can use the materials to make more in the future.

Fun science experiment for kids!
The media could not be loaded. My 5-year-old absolutely loves it! She is enamored with anything STEM related. This is perfect for her, as the activity is both educational and enjoyable. The set has many small pieces. Just to be safe, make sure to supervise when playing. The instructions are pretty simple and are broken down into several easy-to-follow steps. You stir and mix your own creations, then press and shape them into gemstones. The included instruction booklet also helps explain various methods of creating many types of crystals and gems. The only ingredients you will need are food coloring, flour, oil, and salt. So be aware, as this kit does not come with these items. Overall, I would highly recommend this to anyone who has kids. If they aren't interested in science already, then this is a great, fun starter. If they are already interested, then even better!

Need Lots Of ingredients To Use This set
I have ordered other Learning Lab sets for my grandchildren to play with and they have always been excellent. This crystal lab set not so much as I thought it would contain everything that we would need to start making our own crystals. The kit only contains the tools etc but not the actual ingredients that you need to make them; flour, salt, vegetable oil as well as Epsom salts which I did not have in the house. To purchase these ingredients costs quite a bit of money which makes using this kit quite expensive. My grandchildren were so disappointed when we opened this kit to play with only to discover we needed extra ingredients. I did purchase the necessary items and we did use them with this kit. Unfortunately it takes time and my grandchildren soon grew bored so unfortunately I don’t really commend this kit for younger children, perhaps children about the age of 10-12 would have the patience to wait for things to get started but for my grandchildren they lost interest and wanted to do something else instead.

Alright
This is a fun set it's just a shame you need to buy all the ingredients to actually make the crystals. Would feel a little cheeky to give this to a child as a gift as the parent would have to go out and buy everything

Great tool kit for young scientists
A great kit for children to do different experiments with. This is not a single use kit where you get all the different bits and pieces to do the experiments instead you get robust equipment and instructions on what else you need. These kits are great for small hands, they are easy to use and a good size. This would be great for homeschooling or nursery but might not be best for one off activities.

Disappointing
Both myself and my children were excited to receive this gemology experiment kit and it looked promising, there are lots of nice, good quality pieces and a nice looking instruction book that gives several different experiments inside. This is where the problem starts- not everything that you need is included in the set. They are fairly basic ingredients that you need- flour, salt, vegetable oil as well as Epsom salts that I expect most households don’t have. I understand that they wouldn’t be able to include these food items easily but it would be nice to have a bit of forewarning so that you can get to the shops before hand. We started on the first experiment in the book and we were excited to make “gem stones” we soon realised that the experiment was making what was in effect, playdoh, and then cutting out gem shapes with it. This in itself was a little disappointing, and what was more disappointing was that the recipe for it was totally wrong, it was far too watery, so we ended up adding a lot more flour and salt. I read through the other experiments and thought that they will end up being just as disappointing. A younger child would probably appreciate this.
