I'm Hooked On S&J Tools
This is my third Spear and Jackson tool purchase. I also bought a Banjo Garden Fork and a set of Telescoping Ratcheting Anvil Loppers. Because of the quality of those, I decided to order these Telescoping Hedge Trimmers. They've been amazing to use already, and I think they'll be amazing for years to come. My only concern is the wavy edge on them might be hard to sharpen if/when that day comes that they need a fresh edge put on. I'd like to know how the company suggests they be sharpened given this unique design.

He likes them! He uses them! My hedges get done better!
I bought these for my husband, who was looking for a quality shear to trim the bushes (mostly rose of Sharon). He used them and said they performed well. He had bought a new shear also from a well-known small chain hardware store, and also has used those. The proof will be how long these will last vs. the store-bought ones. These were a bit more expensive, so I'm betting these will out-last the others. If I were the one using them, I could give them a more accurate rating (4 or 5), based on personal use. But now I can only tell you what my husband told me.

Great Telescopic Shears, Ideal For Getting At Those Annoying Bits That Your Hedge Cutter Misses
I purchased these recently whilst Amazon's price was very good. However, I will base my review on the product rather than the deal I got. I got these mainly for light trimming of our hedge where you get those annoying patches that your hedge cutter has missed and that always seem to pop up a day or so later grinning at you knowing that you've put all the big heavy cutting gear away! Well, I get the last laugh with these as they are light weight, very sharp and easily extendable, so getting to those missed patches is a breeze. In use; the handles are very comfortable but also have a good gripping effect due to the material used, so they won't slip out of your hands. I found the telescopic adjusters at the base of the handles easy to unlock and each shaft slid in and out smoothly. There is a rubberized bump stop in the center of the shears which helps prevent shock coming back through the handles and also prevents the blades from overlapping in use. The blades easily cut through everything I pointed the shears at and resulted in a very crisp even cut which is good for the hedge. My only criticism is the 'adjustable blade tension nut' (red plastic thing in the middle), to me it just feels a little weak where it joins to the metal adjustment nut and I do wonder how long it will last. For now though I will give 5 stars, as these are by far the best hedge shears that I have owned, but I will be straight back to edit this review and star rating should this or any other part fail before it should.

Only suitable for light use
Having suffered the same problem reported by others with my second pair of Fiskars shears (telescopic extension falling apart due to internal nut not being fastened securely during manufacturing) I decided a few months ago to try these Spear and Jackson shears. They are cheaper, cut well and have a very solid telescopic extension that locks much better than with the Fiskars. Unfortunately, as others have reported, the shock-absorber becomes loose very quickly (in the first hour of use in my case) and then progressively fails. Also the knob that adjusts the blade tension came away and I now have to use a spanner to alter the tension. I wasted a lot of time trying various ways to fix the shock absorber, but in the end the shears went to the tip after only two months of use. So, sadly, for heavy use, such as cutting stinging nettles or brambles or trimming a large hedge, I have found that these shears are far worse than the Fiskars. They are probably OK for just snipping off bits of hedge missed with the hedge trimmer, although for delicate trimming jobs, like deadheading lilacs, I have found that the Fiskars are easier to use because they are slimmer. I also have the Wilkinson Sword shears. They are heavier to use but so far have had proved very robust.

Replacing originals
These arrived nice and quickly, well packaged. I needed them yesterday but Argos failed me so reordered from Amazon. I trued to use them but the open and close catch is now a twist action knob on the end of each handle and one of them is completely seized, so have sadly had to request a replacement. They are very sharp though, just like my original pair (hopefully the return and replace process will go seamlessly) but the new knob arrangement is not going to be as convenient as the twist tube/shaft arrangement on the original set.

Well worth the extra money
I ordered these shears because I couldn't find the set I've been struggling with for a couple of years. They arrived in a timely manner, safely packed and I noticed a marked difference in their performance compared to my usual pair. They are much lighter and therefore easier to use, as they can be extended it isn't such hard work to cut the top of the hedge and seem a lot sharper than I've been used to, if they hold their edge I will be very, very happy with this product.

Alternative use
Originally purchased for garden work, but ended up using this as emergency scissors for my rock wool loft installation. If it was sharp enough to go through heaps of 300 MM fiber glass it should do a good job on hedges as well.. the telescopic handle works well but will need a little bit of muscle power.. so not necessarily a good buy for the elderly, unless I am using it incorrectly.. never read the instructions - don’t remember seeing it :) great product - hopefully it will last.
