Works well on HTC One M8
I have tested this product on my HTC One M8, and it works for all USB modes I attempted: mass storage host, mouse, and keyboard. Note that I did not try using multiple USB devices via a hub. Android KitKat USB Mouse and Keyboard The mouse and keyboard modes work on KitKat without any special app (I'm using a keyboard plugged into my phone as I type this). I tried plugging in a Logitech wired keyboard, as well as a Logitech wireless mouse. Both worked flawlessly. It's kind of funny to see a mouse arrow cursor appear on my phone's display. Android KitKat USB File Management The USB mass storage host mode on Android KitKat typically requires you to download a USB plug-in app. But the good news is there's no need to root your phone, as there is one app (USB-Stick Plugin) that works with the Total Commander file manager app. The two together allowed my phone to see all storage areas on my wife's Droid 4, and to copy, paste, and delete from both the internal and external areas of that phone--all without rooting my HTC One. Now if Google would just fix KitKat to allow apps to modify my own phone's external SD card! Build Quality I read through the complaints (1-3 star ratings) of this product, and found almost all had to do with user error or the poor physical fit of USB connectors in general. Some users complained the connection was too loose; others that it was too tight. Nearly all of the comments about poor fit or build quality related to the cable adapter, not the one-piece adapter, which I found to be quite solidly built, and fit very well on both sides. Yes, the USB-A side is a little shallow, but it's not loose. And yes, the micro USB side is somewhat firm--more so than any other phone micro USB connector I've tried. So I agree with one reviewer that this device could cause issues in the future (minus one star). Conclusion This single unit USB OTG adapter is probably better built than the cable version of this product. Be aware that the snug fit might stress your micro USB port, as these ports tend to be easily damaged. But the product works exactly as it should and is suitably compact.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ADAPTER!!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ADAPTER! I realize Amazon groups a bunch of OTG adapters together in the review, so I'll be specific I got the StarTech Adapter (Not Cord) listed here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BFYH11Q/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2 I am an MIS/IT Specialist and am constantly looking for ways to speed up routine jobs. I am also supporting more and more mobile devices as the days go on, and I found this little sucker to be an essential part of my toolkit. In the past I would always carry a MicroUsb Cord on me, and plug a device I am managing straight into my laptop when I needed to transfer a file (When the file was Too big for Wifi or Bluetooth to be practical ex... Slow wait times) onto a clients device in a timely manner. Well now I don't even have to whip out my laptop half the time as I have my OTG Adapter in my pocket and my SS Flash drive around my neck, loaded with most of the files that I use on a daily basis. I would recommend this adapter to anyone who is trying to make transferring files to and from their android phone an easy task. I didn't even care about this, as I already have a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard that I could pair with my phone when needed, but I tried it just to try it... I plugged a clients USB wireless keyboard and mouse dongle into my OTG adapter, and right away, without downloading any other apps, I had a working mouse and keyboard on my phone! I also tried a USB hub, which worked with 2 flash drives and the Mouse and keyboard. So Id say this adapter is well worth the $5! Side Note: This Adapter was tested with a SP Marvel M50 16GB USB3.0 Flash Drive listed below, and worked GREAT!!! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EUVB09K/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1 I can also confirm that this adapter works out of the Box with the LG Optimus G Pro (LG E-980), the LG G3 (From Sprint), Galaxy S5, And Sony Xperia Ion (AT&T). These were all with Kit Kat 4.4.2 or above. I only tried it on 1 Ice Cream Sandwich phone, and it did not work out of the box, I Don't remember the exact model, but I know it was an older HTC, running 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) Hope this Helps!

StarTech quality! YES
StarTech and Anker are the two companies I go to the most, when I want quality. Amazonbasics is also quite good. Here, the issue is, a cell phone micro USB port is tempermental. If it does not like the cord hooked into it, your device will not charge or the OTG will not register. So when I don't want to spend a lot of time with my cell phone USB port, I just go straight to StarTech. White one works better than the black right-angled one on the cell phones I have. They both work. This white one even rescued my Kingston 115 GB thumb drive nobody else could read! God bless StarTech! If you use another brand, you're taking a chance. Mind you, some cell phones do not allow OTG hookup and will not tell you this. In which case, go back to the cell phone provider and tell 'em to go to hell: because a cell phone without an OTG, is useless. And of course buy these StarTech cables that fit in nice and tight. Give as gifts to your friends..tip your Uber driver, etc.

This cable has a strange pinout, I returned my 1st cable as faulty
This cable has a strange pinout, I returned my 1st cable as faulty, and requested a refund on receiving the replacement with the same "fault". I ordered another make of cable from amazon and it fixed the problem I had with the Star tech cable. BUT I am not using the Star tech cable as a conventional OTG use and required a pin to pin connection between all 5 pins, not realising OTG cables use pin 4 as master/slave signal. I did not need pin 4 BUT it is connected to pin 5 (ground) at the mini end and GROUND is not connected at the micro end. I followed this up further and found Star Tech web site publishes a JPG image of the pinout, which matches the cables I returned, (as described above). I don't think this is true to the OTG spec and may be causing others reviewing here to have fault with the cable. Other pinouts for OTG cables online show pin 4 connected to ground at the HOST end of the cable and open at the other (slave) end, BUT with ground connected through, pin5 to pin 5. This lack of pin 5 connection was causing my application to fail with this cable. Others here, have reported similar problems as pins 4 and 5 shorted. EDITED to correct typo re. mini versus micro ends of cable.

How to make USB OTG Adapter work on an Android device that does not support power out to this adapter!
I purchased this USB OTG Adapter in the hope that my Asus Memo Pad 7 ME173X tablet would connect easily to it. Unfortunately it was not recognised and it would not connect at all. So I did some Youtube research and found out that The Asus Memo Pad 7 does not supply a power output to make any USB OTG work at all. So I researched some more on Youtube and found out a technical trick to make the USB OTG work with the Asus tablet and possibly other Android devices that do not provide enough power to make an OTG Adapter work. Here are the main two steps. STEP 1. You must have a ROOTED Android device to make this work. I went into Play store and downloaded the following apps to the tablet. King Root and rooted my Asus tablet with one click. I installed Root Checker and verified my tablet was rooted. Then I installed StickMount which mounts the OTG USB once it's plugged into the tablet and finally ES File Explorer, this program lets you find and access anything connected to the OTG USB.....Phew!, a lot to install, but trust me it worked for me. STEP2. I purchased a cheap 4 x USB hub (£1.99) with a short USB cable. I then made a homemade USB male to USB male cable by joining two unused USB cables together which I had lying around (just connect the red and black cables, the green and white are not needed). I plugged one end of the homemade USB cable into my Asus tablet USB/mains charging plug adapter (to provide the power) the other end into any one of the four spare USB connections on the USB hub. I then connected the USB power lead leading out from the USB hub directly into the OTG USB adapter. Then I plugged a USB memory stick with movies, music, photos and a few documents to test out into the USB hub, then plug the OTG USB adapter into the tablet. If you have followed the steps precisely you should get a large symbol flash up in the middle of your tablet screen indicating a connection is made. Using StickMount, click 'mount', this will mount the OTG Adapter, then go into ES File Explorer and find the following path by selecting SD Card/USB Storage/sdb1/sda1. All being well you should now have access to the contents on your USB memory stick. I think this setup will work with most tablets and android phones if they don't have enough power to power up a USB OTG Adapter by themself. Earlier versions of some Android phones and tablets may not work though. I hope this lengthy instruction helps those who have struggled and failed to make the USB OTG Adapter work with their Android device..

Works perfectly for OctoPi
Works perfectly for what I needed it for, which was for my Ender 3 v2 printer to a Raspberry Pi Zero 2. Only provides data, ground and no power which is what I needed. I have deducted a star for the plain fact that I don't think it was mentioned in the description about the exact pin out of the cable and may mislead others.

convenient directional cable
Cable arrived with "host" label attached to one end. Immediate big clue! I had bought it to transfer files between my android phone and netbook/tablet (on my travels). Yes ... it only works in one direction! The ends look the same, but a quick bit of plug labelling soon fixed things for the future. [I always put up/down labels on USB plugs anyway ... so as not to damage them/socket trying to ram them in the wrong way ... hope the new protocol is iPhone-style (?)]

Excellent
I'm delighted with this. I needed to connect a stick to the Lenovo M10 tablet I've just bought, so that I can access pics and text during onsite research, so I bought some cheap adapters, but couldn't get a good solid fit at the micro USB end. I'd had a 120gb stick fried previously with another tab with USB C, so didn't want to take any chances. This however gives a good solid fit at both ends. Excellent product! And I'm glad to say my tablet is OTG compatible.
