He is an average-size 4yr 8 mo old, wearing a size 12 show. The socks fit, but just barely. We should have got the M rather than the S size. Of course, he loves the patterns (he helped pick them out so no surprise), and the quality seems good, though not the sort of thing that looks as though it will be super-durable. Hey, if I only wanted practical I would have bought Hanes white in a 6-pack.

Factory mismatch?

Not sure what happened - but these socks are FAR too big for the size indicated. I ordered a second pair (different design) at the same time and those fit just fine. I presumed these were just mislabeled. Good quality socks though. We'll hold on to them for a while as our son will just grow into them soon enough.
