Solidly built to last - better than the equivalent Wahl
Remington PG6171 The Crafter: Beard Boss Style and Detail Kit, Male Trimming, Grooming (11 Pieces) Wahl Lithium Ion All In One Grooming Kit #9854-600 I had an opportunity to literally compare side-by-side this Remington The Crafter and the Wahl Lithium Ion All In One Grooming Kit #9854-600. They were exactly the same price so I figured I should give it a thorough comparison. Intially, I was so pleased with an older version of essentially the same Wahl model that I went out and purchased a second one. As soon as I turned it on for the first time I noticed that the on/off switch wobbled and felt very plastic. And when I plugged in the cord to charge the battery, I was reminded of the reason I needed the older model replaced: the little plug was extremely tight and I felt like I was going to break it, especially when I had to pull fairly hard to unplug it. In the older model, I was very disappointed that the internals of the PLUG literally broke inside, leaving me no ability to charge my Wahl groomer. Everything still worked perfectly! That’s the rub. After 4-5 years of daily use, it was still working as good as new. I hated throwing it away just because of the power connector internals. Not being satisfied with how “plastic fantastic” this was, I purchased a different brand that cost the same: a Remington “The Crafter” Style and Detail Kit. After using both, I chose the Remington, but the Wahl did offer a few advantages. Both have Lithium batteries. Both come with a little case and multiple beard guides and fixed length combs. The Wahl (W) featured a few things that most do not have, including the Remington (R): - A wider T-blade, which I think would make cutting hair easier (which is something I wouldn’t use it for) - It boasted 1-minute charging. It also allowed you to use it when plugged in and charging – the R does not. This feature was very necessary with my older Wahl since the battery discharged much quicker after many years and wouldn’t hold a charge very well if not plugged in. I just kept it plugged in for the most part. (Remember, this is after 4-5 years of use.) As far as functionality, I couldn’t tell a difference between the beard detail trimmer. The included attachment guides, although slightly different, all function similarly, with the R offering an attachment that can be adjusted in smaller increments. The R offers two motor speeds (the W, only one – but I always use the faster “turbo” speed on the R, which is essentially the same as the W, so that didn’t really matter to me). The biggest advantage the Wahl had was the foil ultra-close shaver. Wahl had a double head and was much wider. It was noticeably faster and more thorough when shaving my neck and face areas. This, alone, was ALMOST enough for me to keep the Wahl. This advantage, however, introduced a big weakness, especially when compared to the Remington: Switching out the different heads (trimmer, foil shaver, nose trimmer) on the W always made me feel like I was going to break it because it seemed so cheaply made. The pieces did not snap in easily. I found myself trying to avoid switching to the other head simply out of fear of breaking it. The R, on the other hand, requires a simple twist of the head both off and on (versus prying it off and fitting/snapping it back in after a bit of a struggle). The R feels solid and I now never fear that switching out to my nose trimmer, for example, will break my trimmer. The whole Remington Crafter feels much more solidly made. The on/off button is a push button behind waterproof rubber. The R is waterproof, by the way, while the W is not. I think not being waterproof is what led to my older Wahl breaking at the power connection as there was a tiny hint of rust build-up. The Remington uses a larger, rubber connector that doesn’t seem like it could break inside. As I mentioned, the Wahl on/off switch literally jiggled around. This did not affect its ability to switch it on and off, but the “plastic-ness” and the not solid feel really turned me off to this product as I give it just 6 months to a year before it breaks somehow. Another difference was the nose trimmer. Wahl’s was a roughly quarter-inch version of the trimmer. It did its job reaching into my nose. But the Remington has a very different, more functional design that reaches further in and around the nose. If you have a big or long honker, you’ll want the Remington. Mostly insignificant: the little attachments bag for the W was much better than the R. They’re both functional so that did not play into my decision. Bottom line: The Remington is built much more solidly. Despite my long history with a Wahl, I just couldn’t get past its plastic-fantastic cheaply-made feel, ESPECIALLY when compared to the Remington. The one caveat is if you use the ultra-close foil shaver quite a bit for a large area of your neck and face: the Wahl’s version is much better. (I just hope the little plastic pieces inside the heads don’t break when you switch between the trimmer and the ultra-close.)

Amazing Trimmers
Over the years I have purchased many trimmers of all brands and types. These are the best yet. The attachments are great and work so effortlessly. I recommend these rate 10 stars

Does the job
Bought this for my husband. He says it works well and is quiet. Doesn’t pull at the beard. One of the attachments did break. And he said that it does take along time to get a full charge. Other than that it works well.

This thing lasts!
I had one of these last for 6 years before getting this new one. Hopefully the quality is still the same, but as it stands, they last a good long while. My old one hasn’t even bit the dust yet, but I did drop it a number of times throughout the years, and the clip holding the attachments in place has started to fail. It still works, but with the attachments now popping off far too easily. Honestly, I’ve been impressed. There are a lot of trimmers out there, but I bought this one again because it’s always been solid; battery life is good, and the width of the trimmer is slimmer than many, making it easier to hold and maneuver. I’ll update if this new one has problems, or shows signs of lesser quality, but so far, it seems to be the same, which is great!

Wow
I have had maybe four or five different ones that I certainly remember and this one is slick! - Great battery life. Now, I am not shaving sheep or something, I trim the mustache and goatee and then shave. I do not charge for weeks. Two speed settings. - Multiple different heads. I mainly use the adjustable guide to set the length of my trim and the crazy little straight one for getting that weird fizz on the outside of my ears. That thing is da boss as using the torch to burn them off left marks. -Nifty little case makes it easy for travel. -Waterproof. I do not just go jump in the shower to test I out but I do use I in here depending on how much time I have. The copper look just happened to be the one I was able to find, when I was looking. It is sexy, but not needed. One minor gripe; if I get lazy and try the poor mans shave with just the clipper, it seems to cut my facial hair at a weird angle. Next thing you know, my shirt will grab one hair and nearly rip it out of your face. Stays that way until it grows again. Maybe I am going too fast or not using the right close angle, who knows. Long story short, don't do that. Would not hesitate to buy another.

4 months later doesn't work...
Overall the trimmer was great when it worked. Other than the case, everything impressed me about it. But after about 3 months it would randomly turn on by itself and drain it's battery. Soon after the power on/off button wasn't working properly. I would have to press it multiple times to get it to turn off/on. Eventually it got to a point that I tried turning it on and after 5 minutes of pressing the button there was a 50/50 chance of it turning it on and once it finally did it was impossible to turn off. Only plugging it in to the charger would turn off the trimmer. Now it's month 4 and it won't work at all. Too bad, it was promising at first but won't be buying again unless it's covered by the two year limited warranty.

Crapped out after 4.5 years
I only used this maybe once every 6-10 days. I think I charged it only a few times a year. After 4.5 years it is no longer work. No light comes on when you press the button, and it doesn't seem to accept a charge. It says that there's a 5 year limited warranty, but I haven't been able to get Remington to honour it. Not sure how long these are supposed to last, but 4.5 years seems a bit short to me.

Cuts like a boss!
Best clipper I've ever owned. Light, long lasting, and cuts quickly. I use all the accessories to trim my body and beard and shave my head with the bare clipper. Works awesome. Very light and packs small for travelling in the supplied carry case. Can't be beat in my opinion. As far as maintenance goes, I like to run the cutter head under the tap with a bit of liquid soap after each use. Next go around I apply a few drop of 3 in 1 household oil to the cutter head before use. The cutter is still as sharp as ever +2 yrs on.

Lasted 1 yr, 2 months.
Decided to withhold a review on this until it inevitably died. This is a mostly plastic trimmer, as you would expect at the price. Easy to use, great battery life, plenty of attachments and combs if you have fairly thin hair/beard and keep it short like I do. So during its lifespan I was quite happy with this trimmer. Eventually, the plastic wear from exchanging heads took its toll and the main trimmer head will no longer stay attached. Not sure if it's the head or the main unit, so maybe the other attachments still fit securely, but without the main head it's no longer useful so I'll buy a different one. You might argue that for the price, lasting 14 months is terrible value. Having gone thru a couple other brands at a similar price point, I'd say average value. The battery which is the usual culprit in these rechargeable trimmers, was fantastic in my opinion, and maybe I was unlucky with the plastic failing. Your mileage may vary. The two speed motor was nice, probably helped conserve power for my usage, but like I said, maybe my hair didn't provide a challenge even at the lower speed. Hard to recommend this for full haircuts, especially longer thicker hair. Overall, if your expectations are not too high, and you don't get too unlucky, this trimmer could be right for you.

Have been using this product for about a month. Overall I am happy, however I bought this as an upgrade to a $25.00 multi type unit and just expected more. Pros: 1. Battery Life is excellent 2. Nose trimmer is very handy 3. Powerful on hi-speed Cons: 1. Case is a cheap piece of junk 2. Wish the min-foil was at least a dual blade. You really need to go over each area multiple times to get it to trim even the lightest stubble.
