Organizes Cone Threads

the wire prongs that come with the cone organizer are essential to holding the cones in place. They work well for serger cones as well as other brands of cone threads with large center openings. However, the Superior, Floriani and Rheingold cone center openings were just a scant too narrow for the prongs to go through. That made the prongs useless and the cones would swing inside the ArtBin Super Deep satchel. Fortunately, my spouse had a tool that could drill the cone openings a bit larger so that the prongs could hold the cones in place. The thread trays fit perfectly inside the super deep satchel and help organize the threads as desired. I would buy the trays again.

Works very well

I purchased this product to hold my serger cones after having tried other products in the past. I use Toldi-Lock cones made by Gutermann, and I've found that the bases of the cones are slightly smaller than other thread cones. This makes products that only have a small lip or groove to set the cones upon entirely useless to me. On the other hand, this product has full-length wire spindles as well as grooves for the cones to sit in. My Toldi-Lock cones do not fit into the grooves (Maxi-Lock cones do), but are still held in place very well by the wire. The other products I've tried were enclosed boxes, where this is a tray--not enclosed. This could be good or bad, depending on how you plan to use it. You can still stack the units on top of each other; however, I realized it would be also possible to mount the units vertically to the wall, and plan to do so to save storage space and provide easier access to the thread. I read reviews before purchasing this product that stated that the wire spindles were not sturdy, and I have to disagree. When you initially set this product up, the wire spindles snap into place. As long as you push them all the way into their grooves, they are quite sturdy. This is a great product; well worth the price.

Some spool brands don't fit the base grooves

Before purchasing, measure your serger spool base. To fit in the Cone Thread Tray groove, the cone base inside witdth should be 3.5 centimeters or 1 3/8 inches (Maxi-Lock or Surelock size). Different than this dimension, the cone spool base will sit either inside or outside of groove, and cone will wobble more than desired. My Mettler Seracor cone base is too narrow and will not fit in the groove. It is true that a standard cone (about 3,000 yds) when turned upside down will fit between the cones so one may achieve more than 25 cones in storage. The description offered for this tray suggests certain brands that will fit well but doesn't cover all brands, so to prevent disappointment, may I suggest that the description include the cone base dimensions most appropriate for this cone holder.

Cone thread storage

Very nicely packaged and was easy to unpack and set up. Very functional.

Fragile and cheap

The wires for the cone thread fit very loosely in their slots, even if you widen their bases a bit to strengthen the spring action. I may have to run strips of duct taped underneath to hold the wires in place Also, unlike the picture, two small cones do not fit on one wire. There is no way to hang the base on the wall. Overall, a board with dowels would be a better, sturdier choice.

Good but not perfect

Almost gave this three stars, but the problems with this unit are not all ArtBin's. The major problem is that brands of cone thread do not come on standardized cones. For example, Glide thread by Fil-Tec has a small hole at the top of the cone that doesn't fit over the wire holder. The wire holder can be removed so the Glide cones can be stored in the case, but they will rattle around loose. Maybe I will try to reshape some of the wire holders with pliers so they will fit Glide cones. The one-star deduction belonging to ArtBin is because the wire holders are really fiddly to insert. Plan on spending a good half hour getting all of them fully inserted. When assembled and placed in the Super Satchel. thread is well protected from dust and can be stored neatly on a shelf or on the floor.

Good for large cones

I purchased this item to hold my large cone threads that were in a cardboard box. The Tray can easily accommodate 30 large spools. The plastic white Tray the cones sit on is sturdy and the metal prongs that you insert into the Tray to hold the cones works okay. I do wish the metal prongs were thicker but they do the job. I did not think the Tray was translucent but opaque if that matters to anyone. I needed a storage container to sit the tray into so I purchased the ArtBin Super Satchel Double Deep Box (also from Amazon) to place the tray into and keep all my large cones dust free. They work perfectly together. I would note that if your planning to constantly be taking the Tray out of the ArtBin Box, it is rather difficult to grasp the Tray and lift it out with the cones on it. Since I don't plan to lift the Tray out of the ArtBin box, it is fine for me.

Overlock thread holder

The parcel arrived before the due date and was well packaged. It is exactly what it looks like on the website. I am very pleased with the product. It is expensive for what it is but as it came from America I suppose you have to add that into the price.

Great way to store your overlocker threads

Great way to store your overlocker threads. Very easy to put together, doesn't need to much effort to get the metal supports in place. Makes it easy to see the threads you have, all in one place.

Does the job it's supposed to do

This is exactly what I wanted. At just over £14 I think it's a wee bit expensive for what it is but it keeps the large overlocker thread spools tidy and free of dust.
